COLOPHON FOR “A DAY AT CONEY ISLAND ” |
|||||||||||||
The portfolio “A Day at Coney Island” was inspired as much by the destination’s iconic place in New York City’s past as for its slow and regrettable fade from our eastern skyline. Included are printmakers Michael Arike, Stephen A. Fredericks, Martha Hayden, Bill Murphy, Alan Petrulis and Steven Walker. Each of these artists has a stylistic approach to etching ideally suited for Coney Island interpretations. Collectively their prints document - in a panorama like view - this imperiled landscape. Each of the artists was provided a supply of ink created for printing the edition. Based on the color sepia, the blend contains parts of Payne’s gray, cardinal red and process yellow that serve to unify the portfolio. The result is a Victorian era appearance that accentuates the ongoing disappearance of the historic locale. The etchings are all printed on radiant white Somerset Velvet paper. The inter-leafing separating the individual prints is a handmade Chiri paper from Japan. Four Hands Design Studio handcrafted the custom folios housing the prints which are covered with the studio’s unique paste painted papers. Artist Edward Fausty printed the title page and colophon in his Union City, New Jersey studio. The New York Etcher’s Press, Inc. was founded in New York City to produce limited edition portfolios of original intaglio prints by gifted and otherwise self-publishing artist-printmakers.
