Tom White was born October 5, 1942 in Detroit, Michigan. Following high school he studied art at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California. After returning briefly to Michigan he moved to New York City in 1967 where he has lived ever since. He continued his art studies at The School of Visual Arts in the 70's, and for many years has been a member of the Art Students League of New York where he continues to work in the etching studio. In addition to Tom's accomplishment in the graphic arts, he has practiced professional story telling; was a founding member of the New York Story Telling Center; and, founder of The Tale Bearers - an organization dedicated to increasing awareness of folklore, legend and mythology as seen through the visual and dramatic arts. He has performed his craft at several landmark venues such as St Peters Church at Citicorp Center, and La Mama Galleria. Tom has also written over a dozen stories for Parabola Magazine. His remarkable etchings frequently employ a narrative device combining his love of the story with an exceptional drawing skill. Tom approaches the medium in a studied, practiced manner developing a series of detailed drawings and sketches before taking on the plate. There is an influence of the Renaissance masters and later British School in his work. Tom is adept at the needle, aquatint, burnisher and soft ground. He is also a co-founder of the New York Society of Etchers. To discuss or purchase a painting, please contact Tom White directly at benbulben96@yahoo.com. |
